Your home survey is complete, your new garage door has been chosen & ordered, and your installation date is booked. The next step is to make sure we’re able to get to the garage and have enough room to carry out the installation safely.
At Ryedale Garage Doors, we’ll take care of the installation itself, but there are a few things you can do before our team arrives to help everything run smoothly on the day.
Clear the Area Inside Your Garage
One of the most important things you can do is make sure our installers have enough room to work safely.
You don’t necessarily need to empty the entire garage, but anything close to the existing garage door and opening should be moved further back. This includes items such as:
- Bikes
- Tools and toolboxes
- Lawnmowers and garden equipment
- Shelving or freestanding storage
- Boxes and other stored belongings
- Gym equipment
- Children’s toys
- Anything valuable or easily damaged
Our team will need space around the opening and inside the garage to remove the existing door, install the new one and work safely with tools and equipment.
If you have a vehicle stored in the garage, please move this before we arrive.
Keep Your Driveway Clear
We’ll need easy access to the front of your garage throughout the installation.
If possible, please move cars, bins and anything else that could restrict access to the garage or driveway before our installers arrive.
We need to bring the new garage door and installation equipment from our vehicle to the garage, so keeping the driveway clear gives us the space we need to work.
If other members of the household normally park on the driveway, it’s worth arranging alternative parking for the duration of the installation.
Make Sure We Can Access Your Property
If there are gates, barriers or other restricted access points between the road and your garage, please make sure we’ll be able to get through when we arrive.
It’s also worth considering whether there are any narrow entrances or other restrictions that could make it difficult for our installation vehicle to reach the property.
If there’s anything unusual about access to your home, please let us know beforehand so we can plan accordingly.
Remove Anything Attached to the Existing Garage Door
If you’ve attached hooks, signs, decorations or other items to your existing garage door, please remove these before your installation date.
It’s also worth checking around the garage opening for anything you’ve added since your home survey that could get in the way of the installation.
If you’re unsure whether something needs moving, just ask us before the day.
Keep Children and Pets Away From the Work Area
Garage door installation involves large components, power tools and moving equipment, so the immediate work area needs to remain clear.
Please make sure children and pets are kept away from the garage and driveway while our team is carrying out the installation.
Make Sure Electricity Is Available for Electric Garage Doors
If you’re having an electric garage door installed, we’ll need access to a suitable power supply.
Any electrical requirements for your particular installation will have been discussed with you beforehand, so please make sure any agreed electrical work has been completed before your installation date.
This helps avoid delays when we’re setting up and testing your new garage door.
What About Your Existing Garage Door?
We’ll remove the old garage door as part of the work and take it away for recycling once the installation is complete, free of charge.
Trying to remove an existing garage door yourself isn’t recommended. Garage doors can contain heavy components and springs under considerable tension, so it’s much safer to leave this to our experienced team.
Do You Need to Be at Home?
It’s useful for someone to be available during and after the installation so we can show you how your new garage door works, explain the controls where applicable and answer any questions you have.
If you’ve chosen an electric door, we’ll also show you how to operate the door and any remote controls supplied.
What Happens on Installation Day?
When our team arrives, we’ll get everything ready before removing your existing garage door.
We’ll then install your new door, operator and any additional equipment included with your order before setting everything up and testing the door to make sure it’s operating correctly.
Before we leave, we’ll make sure you’re happy with your new garage door and understand how to use it.
Garage Door Installation Checklist for Homeowners
Before your garage door installation, remember to:
- Move your vehicle out of the garage
- Clear belongings away from the garage opening
- Keep the driveway clear
- Make sure we have easy access to the property
- Remove anything attached to the existing garage door
- Complete any electrical work we’ve discussed with you
- Keep children and pets away from the installation area
- Let us know beforehand about any access issues
A little preparation beforehand gives our installers a clear, safe working area and helps us get your new garage door installed with as little disruption as possible.

Great service from the day Rob came to look at the work needed, measure up, and provide the quote. Doors were made to measure, sliding sideways because of our garage design. Trish kept us informed about delivery and installation dates. Not an easy installation but the chaps were brilliant in finding solutions.
